On the most part the people I have been working with are intelligent thoughtful humans. They just want to do good. They want to protect. They KNOW their gig pays lousy. Yet they will stand at their post and do their job. They are what best in America. Even if they feel the Right wing falsely has their back, they will do best for the people they protect. They are not evil. They are good Americans.
But, there I was. With my working class brethren side by side. People who care about what's best for their families and homes. Not about ideology. Ask the widower of a Police officer or welfare worker if her husband or wife gave a rat's ass about gay marriage.
They just want to do their best for their love ones.
As Americans that is all we ask.
I knew my working heroes would not approve of my beliefs. Nor did I care. We live in America.
It troubled me hearing some of their comments.
I had a profound sense of sadness seeing our young people protesting, 3 years ago, some were using empty paint buckets digging, WITH the police, for our 9/11 lost ones. The "anarchist", of today, was the good citizen on 9/11/01. I know.
I was that good citizen/"anarchist" of today.
I was that cat on 9/13/01 digging and on 8/29/04, marching, trying reclaim our country.
How did WE get divided?
3 years ago, we worked side by side to save lives.
Now, we're locked down in plastic cuffs, by the same hands who gave me water and thanks.
How did this happen?
This is our American tragedy.
Wednesday:
We had a rally today.
My UNION FIGHTING FOR ME!! We took the streets! We set up video screens!
We had celebrities! DANNY GLOVER WAS THERE! They were fighting for ME and my brothers and sisters!
Then, there was Steve Earle....
"I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home "-
Steve Earle
I met Steve Earl today.
He was a nice enough cat. I thanked him for his music and for what he's trying to do.
He sang about the mountain that was the home of the coal miner. For a kid from Brooklyn, raised in Queens. I could only think about the housing project that's was home to many of my friends and family.
The coal mines of West Virginia. The company mines. Are the same as "city job" that I have.
I work for the man. And I shop in the man' s store. Only difference is. The man in NYC is not as honest as the man who owns the coal mine.
The man who own's the coal mines tells you up front "your my bitch"
The man from NYC fools you to thinking you are totally free.
More alike then different we are.
Steve Earl, I feel, understand America NEEDS A revolution. A revolution of thought, ideas and attitude.
Attitude that the homeboy from the Bronx, at his core, wants what the good ole boy from Virginia wants.
Our American dream fulfilled.
"Got a boss? Get a union"-Steve Earle
Ever since I bought his CD, I think I get were he was coming from. Call it an epiphany. (Yeah it's weak but maybe that's what it was.) He's just a working class kid from the country who gets what this working class kid from the city is about. We get fucked by the man...
I wonder at what point do we, who struggle, understand that the dude from West Virginia HAS THE SAME ISSUES as the dude from Brooklyn?
We ARE Americans. Yeah I know that sound cliche but that's a fact! Its not about Red states or blues states with that cat who trying to pay his kid's bills! DO you think WE really give a shit about gay marriage when we don't know if we can pay for our kids school supplies?
The cat from the mountain who preaches to about getting fucked by the owner of the company mine is just as much my brother as kewl breeze from the "40 projects" is trying to get a city job.
We HAVE the same values! We have the same LOVE of nation. Yes, I am pro-choice but that doesn't make me any less of an American as you who is anti-choice!..Its OK to be anti-choice. You feel that God's gift is so precious that you would not sanction the murder of innocence. That I will never argue but you must understand that the child killer has just as much as a right to life as the innocent child. Cause it is the Lord our God who says "Thou shall not KILL" and "Vengeance is mine".
They are not cliches if you trust in the Lord.
We, as Americans, are not that different.
We disagree in the direction it's going.
But there is ONE irrefutable truth:
We love our nation
One day.
I hope I live long enough to see.
The Anarchist of today, sharing a beer with the today's cop. And they chuckle about how at one time during a hot day in NYC they fought about the same thing,
How much WE love America.
